ERS111H5S Lecture 5: Minerals
Document Summary
What is a mineral ? (where they can be found) We can tell the type of volcano from its minerals. All of the electronics are found within minerals. Wine and grapes are broken down from minerals. It has to naturally occur, however we can create minerals. A rock is a bunch of minerals put together. Crystals have a repeated atomic structure - the crystal lattice(think bricks in a house) Complex(they have more variety in their chemical fomation): Minerals are mostly organized around oxygen(and sulphur) - inorganic formation. Minerals are divided into a few compositional classes. Silicates are the most common class of mineral(almost every rock will contain silicates) Diagnostic physical properties allow identification - this week"s lab. Streak (when you scratch the mineral on a surface) (hematite always leaves a brownish color behind) The highest the mineral, it scratches everything softer. The denser it is the more it has gravity.
