Focus on how styles and periods changed: large shifts in periods, focus on change in style from the 16th century to 17th century art. Classical vs baroque: acknowledge that no two artists have the same style. 5 principles: linear vs. painterly, 16th century, 17th century, plane vs. Recession: line, flat plane in front, emphasis on depth, and objects receding into the background, closed vs. open, contained inside frame and relatively symmetrical, opens beyond the frame and has not constricted to parallel view, multiplicity vs. Relative clarity: clear, structure, geometric, somethings are clear whereas others can appear hazy. More about masses of light and shadows to create the forms. Unified and works towards one main goal/theme. Not about how clear all the characters are: ambiguous interactions. Sees the world the way the viewer experiences the objects in the world subjective. Cut out each individual picture and still understand their role.
