QA Program Elements Quality policy statement Laboratory security Processes and procedures to ensure the integrity and security of evidence from receipt to return or disposal (sing LIMS) Documentation of chain of custody (continuity), work performed, case contacts (documents who you contacted for court ex. Lawyer. If you dont document, and if you have to go back to the case years later, you wont know whats happening. ) Secure and accessible system for control of documents and records (may have to access them later like in court so need to be reliable) Use of validated procedures generally accepted in the forensic science community and authorized by a manager (cant just make up procedures) Use of reference standards and appropriate controls (if you do it, write it down. If its not written down, you didnt do it) Maintenance and calibration of instruments and equipment Documented procurement practices to facilitate purchase of equipment and supplies that meet quality requirements (have to ensure the quality of the things that you use are top notch or otherwise youre wasting time, money and resources) Quality assessment through a program of proficiency testing, technical, and administrative case file reviews, quality reviews, court testimony monitoring, and quality audits (monitor testimonies for new scientists but also for old to see if they are doing everything right) Mechanism for quality improvement (can you do it better?) Documented training program for new staff; support for and commitment to continuing professional development of staff Provision to clients and stakeholders of appropriate edications and orientation. And also safety (what a lab can and cant do) Mechanisms for quality improvement Internal: o Preventive actions
