1. Bloodstain Pattern Evidence
What is it?
oThe study of the shape, size, distribution and location of bloodstains.
oProvides information about the event(s) that created the bloodstains and
bloodstain patterns.
oPattern recognition
oBPA tells us about the HOW as opposed to the WHO.
oHas limitations due to unknown variable.
oIt is an applied science:
Biology,
Physics.
Fluid mechanics.
Trajectory analysis (ballistics).
Chemistry.
Three categories:
oPassive:
Single drops of blood falling through the air as a result of gravity.
Pool patterns. Blood collecting on a surface. Gravity produced stain on a
vertical surface moving down as a result of gravity. (Ex: Punched in the
nose; blood drips down).
oTransfer:
Bloodstain resulting from contact between a blood bearing surface to
another. (Ex: Head bleeding and hits door; blood transfers to door).
Looks for friction ridge impressions. (Ex: Fingerprints).
Wipe pattern.
Swipe pattern. (Clean surface and blood is surface of another object).
