Document Summary

Ridgeology is the study of uniqueness of friction ridge structures and their use for personal identifying. Friction ridges found on both the surface of the hands and the soles of the feet. Pattern of ridges (hills) and furrows (valleys) determined by dermal papillae. Each ridge has single row of pores that emanate sweat, which reproduces ridges. Damage to epidermis will heal without affecting fingerprint pattern. Genetics can influence overall pattern formation- some patterns may be similar. Identical twins have the same dna, but different fingerprints. Fingerpraints do not change as we age besides due to injury, disease, etc. They are classifiable resulting in a searchable database. Three basic types: arch, loop, whorl (developed by sir edward henry in late 1800s)
