G287 – W 1 – 09.09 Facts and 2 interpretations facts − food is cheaper, more abundant, year round “fresh” − - more urbanization, less farmers, big agri-business − food production, processing and retailing now globalized interpretations − good = > fed, quality of life − bad = environmental, social, nutritional, public health and animal welfare problems prof says: − there's a lot less farmers than their used to be, there's a lot less small farms now a days − every business are much more important than they used to be, because its larger production/companies − many agree food are better now and we're spending less money on food and more on quality of life. − Others agree with facts but this was achieved at a higher cost (not monetary) but environmentally, eating more junk food Bottom line (Pros) since 1950s − human numbers and food demand grew dramatically − yet food supplies increased even faster to avoid − mounting food scarcity − destruction forests and other habitats we need − more R&D − dramatic growth per – hectare yields P
