Document Summary

Assuming that the benefits of whale watching depend on the presence and abundance of populations of whales, these benefits are likely to be affected by any direct anthropogenic effects on whale populations themselves. Whale populations are also likely to be affected by changes to other elements of biodiversity and ecosystem functions that hence have a role in providing this benefit through the various trophic links and food webs that support the whales. These include the availability of pelagic prey such as euphausiids (stevick et al. , 2008), copepods (davies et al. , 2013), squid (abend and smith, 1995) and fish (ford and ellis, 2006; ainley and pauly, 2014) that whales feed on. Fisheries and aquaculture combined were worth us $ 217. 5 billion. They were also thought to contribute to the livelihoods of 660-820 million people worldwide through direct and ancillary occupations (about 10-12% of the worlds population) and provide 16. 5% of global animal protein intake (6. 5% of all protein intake).
