Document Summary

Benthic species can also be an important component of the diet of fish (link and garrison, 2002), and a decrease in their abundance can decrease fish larval survival and recruitment success (hussy et al. , 1997). Declining fish stocks and the growing demand for protein for human consumption has led to a sharp increase in aquaculture in the past 20 years (naylor et al. , 2000). For example, many cultured species have large requirements for fishmeal and fish oils supplied by capture fisheries (chapter 6). Aquaculture installations are also responsible for the release of organic waste, antimicrobials and pathogens, habitat destruction, The escape of cultivated species that may mix with native stocks (affecting gene pools) or invade nearby communities. Maintaining food security in an ecologically and socially sustainable manner is a challenge for the coming decades (chapter 1), in which wild capture fisheries and aquaculture will play a major role (godfray et al. , 2010).
