Empire buildings have largely discredited during 20th and 21st centuries. Imperialist has become a term of insult rather than a source of pride. In america, aztec and inca empires flourished before they were incorporated into rival empires of spanish, portuguese , british, french, dutch. Native americans, europeans and africans sustained contact with one another for first time. Early modern era was an age of empire. This represented a new stage in globalization and cross cultural encounters. In early 6th century they turned to mainland: portuguese established themselves along coast of brazil, early 17th century british, french and dutch launched colonial settlements along eastern coast of north america. Countries on atlantic rim closer to american competitors than asian competitors. Fixed winds of atlantic blew steadily on same direction. Upon understanding theses air currents they provided a far different maritime environment than winds of indian ocean.
