Document Summary

Lecture 9: global history and early modern world. Inca civilization began in 14th century ce in western south america. Built their cities in the andes and had a vast road system to connect them. Roads had shops along them and runners to transport messages which used a system called quipu (a device for recording information) Unlike the aztecs, the incas grew their empire through invitation called mitima. In the mita system, all adults engaged in labor (farming, mining) instead of paying taxes. Every adult gave 1/7 of a day as mita. Failed at attempt but gathered information on the incas. Atahualpa the inca emperor followed traditional inca values. One on one battle was seen as honourable. Spanish secretive tactics were looked down upon. Atahualpa had thousands of soldiers but they waited outside the gates. A spanish priest asked atahualpa to accept christianity and spanish rule. Incas gave spanish tonnes of gold and silver in exchange for atahualpa.
