Document Summary
Was a century of several calamities, not just one. Europe was already at its capacity with agriculture in 1300. Population was down 80% in some areas, foods weren"t as nutrient dense as before. 1315-1316 (1st year) most were able to survive because of saved food and limiting consumption, by second year the animals were gone and food was eaten. The lack of nutrients caused them to be vulnerable to other illnesses. 10-15% of the population in some regions died, and those who survived were left malnourished and vulnerable. Hundred years war (1337-1453) between england and france, longest war in european history, was not continuous throughout these years. Charles iv had no male heir, his closest was his nephew (edward iii, and was a teenager at the time and didn"t know much about france) Female succession was not in this time, they were uncomfortable if whether or not a mother could pass on the title to her son.
