Lateral moves are better in different jobs within a company yet still being promotion. Lateral moves are much better than vertical in a flatter organization. Boundaryless careers mean you are not bounded to a single employer. No-one else can manager your career for you. People can have more than one career (protean career) They have told him he will be promoted (potential income. Good chance he may get transferred to a different division. May not get a job as a professor. His family and income very much so mattered to him. Everything that happens to you affects, in some way or another, everything that will happen after. Sometimes the effect is trivial but you never know until later.
