Pol112 lecture 10 sub-saharan africa is the poorest region in the world. Has all of the 23 poorest states (gdp per capita) Only two of 48 african states are above the bottom third of states. Hiv/aids is most severe in the region (diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis kill millions) Life expectancy is 46 years (second worst region is south asia at 64: high child mortality rate. Half of all africans lack a decent source of drinking water. 10% of infants die before age one; 17% die before age five. Violent conflict is widespread (2/3 of all un peacekeeping operations are in africa-sudan, rwanda, Millions have died from violence over course of 20 years- that contributes to poverty children can"t get proper education. The right to rule is ascribed to a person rather than an office. Subordinates pay loyalty to personal patrons, rather than laws and institutions: bribes- police aren"t paid well.
