states has to do these 4 things
as states evolve the task they take on get more complicated
everything was settled through violence before
-Scott- Seeing Like a State
expands on tilly
talks about measurement and map
map gives you directions
Example- trusting gas companies to be telling you the truth
-Scott discusses the process in which local practices of measurement were unified by
the state. it was done via state, power, courts, records, and ultimately coercion.
-most early measures were human in scale (ie. earshot, handful, a rice cooking, etc)
and used units which were locally meaningful
-not accurate
-provides an idea
-how the state tried to standardize the measurements to effectively gain control over
territory
-can figure out distance between communities then you have stragery and control
-military tactics will be accurate
-Local standards of measurement reflected an attribute of power and in strident of
asserting class pro-life (i.e lords would increase the size of bushels needed for
payment, and reduce the size of payment-favouring the lord)
-conflict between the lords and people
