Document Summary

Socrates thinks it is good for its own sake. This is why we are social since we need the help of others: the founding was based on the human needs, the polis will be best served organized under the principle of natural division of labour. We need full-time warriors: the special characteristics of the guardians, they must be spirited and have the qualities of spirit-ness, discretion and wisdom-loving. They have to be educated (this is crucial): education of the guardians: education for the soul, education for the soul is cultural education. Apology): education of the guardians: education for the body, they need physical training. This is not to produce strength but its to balance out the education of the soul: if education is only of the soul, they would become soft. If they would only focus on education for the body, they would become too harsh: they have to have wisdom, discretion, etc. in both soul and body.
