Document Summary

General introduction: brief summary of his life and times, hobbes is dealing with a specific problem. He wrote the book because of his troubles at the time and he tried to figure out the struggles/reasons of civil war: civil war, disorder: he is not looking at this in a partisan view. He has a new way of looking at politics: political theorists thrive during conflict. Hobbes connects the england upheavals as horror since civil war is the hardest to solve: civil war is the death of the commonweal. Government is not natural or doesn"t come about naturally. This theory is used to explain why we need government and why we should obey government: we have an obligation to obey government because we promised to (we had a contract), government is based on contract. Like all contracts, the social contract maintains obligation for both parties (government and citizens).
