The greatest power we can imagine is the common wealth or the state. We need it because of human state of nature, common wealth has to be absolute due to the scientific approach hobbes is taking. The first manner (page 161) is the perpetual and restless desire of power after power, this is because you never know how much is enough to attain future desires. A state of nature equals a state of war, a state of all against all. This is because of natural equality and causes of quarrel including competition (gain), diffidence (safety), and glory (reputation) (cid:894)page 186 (cid:862)i(cid:374) su(cid:272)h (cid:272)o(cid:374)ditio(cid:374) (cid:863)(cid:895) the (cid:373)otivatio(cid:374) to fight i(cid:374) a state of (cid:374)ature ulta(cid:373)etly is survival.
