Tutorial- Rationalism !
-Rationality: materialistic, based on reason, !
-Empty shell, applies to all situations !
-How rational actors act strategically!
-Strategic interactions and the conditions of uncertainty, emerged in 1950s through
social science- Empirical social: rationalist. Deductive way of reasoning without
empiricism (experiences) !
-Broad deductive reasoning- theory of individual choice, makes assumptions on how
actors value outcomes and how they acquire and process information also makes
assumptions on how actors select strategies- foundational elements of the model !
-Game theory is a subsection of rationalism !
-Rational choice model would involve!
1. Utility maximizer !
2. Rational actor would pick the best option !
3. Consistency requirements, rank and order their choices in terms of the choices that
they want- they all have to be connected- transitivity- option a is better than option
b- Expected value !
4. Individuals maximize the expected value, they do not know the actual outcome,
through uncertainty using strategies- scale of measurement- Individuals- micro
foundational support- collective outcomes come from individual choice it is from
bottom-top !
5. Models apply equally to all models, they are similar overtime and space- strategic
interactions- unit homogeneity- strategic interactions- waltz understanding of state- all
functionally the same!
