Brian barry: intellectual critic of multiculturalism: no part of liberalism, as i understand it, to insist that every group must conform to liberal principles in its internal structure. Three liberal constraints on free associations: refraining from breaking laws protecting interests + rights of those outside the association, discusses internal communities: not supposed to do anything bad that spills over outside + nothing considered as absolute . All participants should be adults of sound mind : refers to full understand + comprehension: consent needs to be granted. Participation should be voluntary: free to cease membership whenever they want to: refers to personal volitions + no presence of in uencing rationalities. Voluntary associations vs. associations that have coercive powers: voluntary associations: absence of state power, coercive power associations: various illiberal groups don"t constitute o cial sub-state polities, but capable of coercing their members which violates their citizenship rights.
