POL355Y5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Multilingualism, Parallel Society
Document Summary
Welfare is tied to the quality of life, legitimacy, notions of equality of opportunity and outcomes, backlash, and freedom. These are tied to upward social mobility and capitalism. The cheque is not equal to the welfare state, it includes the health care, education, pension systems, training, etc. The heterogeneity/redistribution trade-off hypothesis: when ethnic/racial diversity increases, the welfare state will decline. The recognition/redistribution trade-off hypothesis: when multiculturalism policies increase, the welfare state decreases. Ethnic diversity is a demographic phenomena whereas multiculturalism is a political phenomenon. Even if ethnic diversity is negatively correlated with redistribution, adopting multicultural policies could change the relationship. Negative relationship between the size of minorities and distribution. National pride is the single most signi cant force for progressive policies. The nation state requires a common civil identity and it needs to be thick enough and substantive enough to function successfully.
