Document Summary
Chapter 5: structure-class words, part i: modifying words. Content words: nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs words used to label and describe the things and activities we perceive in the world around us. These words have been called content words because they are considered to contain meaning independent of one another. Lexical meaning: we assume that it is possible to say what cat, happiness, or pretty refers to, even when it stands alone. Lexical meaning is the kind of meaning that is given in dictionary definition for a word like cat: (cid:498)a carnivorous mammal(cid:499) Words with a lot of lexical meaning finger, tree, swim, humid. Words with relatively clear and independent meanings such as things, do, nice, and then. Structure-class words, or structure words: the, from, and, all, his. Sounds like a sentence because all of the important signals of structure are in place. These include derivational morphemes like the ed and monkled and brangified.
