Document Summary

Sonority is a measure of how loud a vowel/consonant is. We talked about english vowels, they are categorized by height (high, mid, low); backness (back, front, central); roundedness (rounded, unrounded). The schwa is found in unstressed syllables, and the carrot is found in stressed syllables. When /r/ follows the vowels i/i and u/short u the difference disappears. Ex. beer & bead & bid (no difference between the last two i"s); poor & pool & pull. When the word ends in a voiced syllable and open syllable . Canadian raising; when the word ends in a voiceless syllable. Whenever you see a vowel that"s near a nasal consonant, sometimes part of that vowel could be nasalized; depends on the speaker and the condition. A rhotacized schwa is used to transcribe words like butter. /h/ is actually voiced in vehicle ; the vibration of the vocal cords continues throughout the whole word.
