LIN231H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Belongingness, Nonce Word, Bound And Unbound Morphemes
Document Summary
Believe is the base -- the core meaning of unbelievable comes from. In lin100, we learned the root is the core meaning of a word (in this course, it is the base). In this case, un- and -able are affixes. They modify the meaning of the base ( believe ) also, depends on type of affix. Important: affixes based on their position and function, they are divided in two big subgroups. Based on their position prefixes (before the base) & suffixes (after the base). Infix (not an active process), ex. out-freakin- standing, uni-freakin-versity. Based on their function inflectional affixes (they add information about grammar, they don"t change the meaning that much) they"re all suffixes (they cannot be prefixes); there are 8 of them. Some of them attach to nouns (2) -s pl. & - s possessive; some to verbs (4) -s 3rd person & -ed past & -en pp & -ing, some to adjectives and adverbs (2) -er & -est.
