LIN247H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Denotation
Document Summary
Reference is when we understand a word that helps us pick up a word/object in the real world. When we think about meaning, we think in terms of sets. In reference, we go directly to the object (figure 1. 1), whereas with de notation, we first go to the set and then we find the reference in that set; it"s sort of an extra layer. Denotation means we"re identifying the referent within the extension. Note: if something doesn"t exist yet, then it"ll always be non-referring. Quantifies define a subset (i. e. no, all, every) It has the extension of all the possibilities (ex: no cats) It defines the subset of what the extension will be. Quantifies quantity over all possible [insert name of object here] We have the set of all americans. We"re saying this whole set doesn"t drink coffee. The sentence means that some people do, some don"t.
