State of nature = each person for themselves: these universal instincts are unchecked- each person would be as violent and sexual as they wanted. If it"s a small group of people running civilization, only minority will understand how to obtain the goods. If we act on the sexual or violent desirers there will be consequences, so we repress these instincts. Religion as a coping mechanism (freuds theory of religion): nature is controlled by god(s) In the after life you will be rewarded for being a good person and not accepting the sexual desires/violent thoughts. Objections to freuds theory of religion: genetic fallacy, we can see if the claim so is true/false by discovering its origins, arguments for gods existence.
