PHL340H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Episodic Memory, Ion
Document Summary
Reid presents the brave officer problem against locke. Transitivity: a relation r is transitive iff arb & brc arc. Reid"s theory shows memory continuity while maintaining locke"s idea of personal identity. Episodic memory is important for character, but there are other factors as well: eg/ formerly racist jack who fell off tractor, did not lose memories, but changed from mean to nice. And states that are the same as preceding person"s mental char. And states: psychological theory: p1 @ t1 and p2 @ t2 are the same iff enough of p2"s mental characteristics and states were caused by p1s mental characteristics and traits. June 06, 2016: parfit thinks that a) p!=p2 does not have definitive answer and b) relations between p1 and p2 comes in degrees. Second challenge: importance about the practicality: thinks they have answers but swerve away from personal identity.
