Unconscious is filled with emotions, drives, etc. Consciousness is divided into the ego, superego, and id. Constant conflict between ego, superego, and id. Ego-defensive mechanisms: avoids pain, seeks pleasure, conflict between ego and super ego leads to anxiety. Ego develops defense mechanism to avoid anxiety by repression (intentional forgetting, push into unconscious). How you can find balance in the unconscious. Use metaphors to examine what you don"t know. Dreams are caused by repressed, unconscious ideas. 2 types of dream content: latent vs manifest. Analyze dreams to understand the latent (hidden) content. Opposites: dreams about them as equal (disguise). Have a symbol in a dream because it sounds like another word. Dream journal (freudian way): write in present tense, circle nouns, look for opposites, condensation, literal phrases, and do free association. Freud: too negative, impulses, too much emphasis on sex. Jung liked the id, superego, and ego. Dreams are doorways into spiritual growth/personal development.
