Document Summary

Mothers who are emotionally stressed during pregnancy may have infants who are hyperactive, irritable, and/or have feeding and sleep problems. A pregnant mother"s nutritional deficiencies, which interfere with healthy prenatal development, also intensify adverse effects of drugs that that mother has ingested. Mother"s diet informs fetus about local circumstances, so fetus can calibrate physiology to best match circumstances. Socialization is the process by which parents and others ensure that a child"s standards of behaviour, attitudes, skills, and motives conform closely to those deemed appropriate to his/her role in society. (pgs, 424) Socialization is not just parents shaping children"s behaviour, it is a mutual shaping. Families don"t operate in isolation, as they are influenced by the larger settings they exist. Families are part of much larger system including extended family, friends, and teachers as well as institutions that influence development (e. g. schools and religious organizations)
