Chapter 5: Measurement I
Self-Report
Assumes that people are able to report their personality accurately
(requires self-knowledge)
Assumes that people are willing to report their personality accurately
(problem of social desirable theory)
Cannot be used with individuals and in situations that do not meet
these assumptions
oChildren below a certain age
oInmates during parole evaluation
oQuestions about sensitive issues
Informant-Reports
Assume that informants are able and willing to provide accurate
information
Informants may have limited knowledge about the same personality
traits (characteristics), especially those about internal states (thoughts
and feelings)
Informants may be motivated to lie
Self-Informant Agreement
Many studies have examined the correlation between self-reports and
informant-reports
Self-informant agreement is important to validate personality
measures
These studies can also be used to determine the information that
people use to rate their own and other's personality
Accuracy of First Impressions
Targets: 100 adults were videotaped while entering a room, sitting
down, and reading a standard text. The participants then provided self-
reports of their personality
Raters: 24 strangers who had never seen the targets before were
assigned to 4 conditions then rated personality and various physical
attributes (cues)-
oSound-film
oSilent film
oStill photo
oAudiotape
