Document Summary

By the time they are 16, more than one third of all children will suffer from a significant emotional or behavioural disorder. Boys are more vulnerable to mental health problems than girls prior to age 16. Any understanding of the development of psychopathology in children must be from the perspective of multi-factorial, interactional models. Such a perspective allows for why some children remain resilient in the face of tremendous stress while others develop problems with little apparent stress. The roles that various biological and psychosocial factors play in the development of childhood disorders (eg. one"s temperament) are examined in this lecture. Disorders that begin generally before, during or soon after birth, though they may not be detected for some time depending on severity (eg. intellectual/learning disability, autism) The daily experiences that mentally ill children face are often very different from those faced by children without such a disorder: may lead to frustration, confusion, etc.
