Treatment
- Psychological Therapies
- Somatic/biological therapies
How is it that drugs and talking work the same (the two types of therapies)?
- Words or drugs physiological response
- Depression psychotherapy works best, however, drugs are cheaper
- Very few disorders where drugs are mandatory (schizophrenia)
o Schizophrenia is a biochemical disorder (too much dopamine)
Psychological Therapies
- Psychoanalytical psychotherapies
o Freud the neurologist
o Subconscious mind
o Common tool used: free association (say whatever comes to mind)
Theory: At some point you’ll say something that comes from your
subconscious mind
Repeat back to them what the person said to have you think about it and
analyze it
- Cognitive therapies
o Comes from the idea that we think about things, and some of the things we think
about may not be correct
o Faulty thoughts (thinking you’re worthless, unattractive, stupid)
o Thoughts are far from accurate
o “False student syndrome” or “imposter syndrome” when will they realize I
don’t belong here (common thought at grad school)
o This is more of a confrontational therapy than psychoanalysis: thoughts are being
confronted, asks you why you think this way
o Assumes you learned these beliefs incorrectly
o Attempts to restructure person’s thinking (dispute illogical beliefs, increase
feelings of self worth, teaching people that not all individuals express their
emotions in the same way)
- Behaviour therapies
o Tend to not to want to know about your childhood and your past (previous
internal conflicts), or how you think about things
o Interest is in how you behave and react to things
o Comes from theories of conditioning (stimulus and response)
Classical (associate two stimuli) and operant (associate stimulus with
response)
All animals can learn through conditioning
o Behaviour modifications

Document Summary

Depression psychotherapy works best, however, drugs are cheaper. Very few disorders where drugs are mandatory (schizophrenia: schizophrenia is a biochemical disorder (too much dopamine) Psychoanalytical psychotherapies: freud the neurologist, subconscious mind, common tool used: free association (say whatever comes to mind) Theory: at some point you"ll say something that comes from your subconscious mind. Repeat back to them what the person said to have you think about it and. Classical (associate two stimuli) and operant (associate stimulus with response) Not interested in how you became alcoholic, will just work to change behaviour: uninterested in the origins of abnormal behaviour, behaviour therapy is not highly addictive (extremely successful at treating anxiety disorders) Learnt fear through classical conditioning (associating two stimuli with each other that don"t belong with each other) Modeling: shows you how to do something and the consequences of it. Extinction: this is also effective, but there can be a rebound effect, kid asks for chocolate; mom gives chocolate.
