First part of applied psychology (usually think of as clinical psychology, but not all applied psychologists are clinicians, some are counsellors) Assessment is an ongoing process (even when you think you have diagnosed, could be wrong) Typical assessment takes hours-days (looking at multiple factors over multiple environments over a different number of scales) Yearbook of mental measures contains information on psychological tests (assessments) There have been different ways to assess people in past (some of which are nonsense, like phrenology) Most techniques today are mostly based on scientific evidence. Personality tests looks at how we can feel. Get a general sense of what problem is. Referral to person that can do appropriate assessment for problem(s: social worker, psychologist, physician. Nature of referral is important, gives us clues about clients understanding of their problem & willingness to do something about it. Can come from parents, teachers, the system (law & enforcement assessment vs. jail time)
