Regardless of category, friends are important to children. Being popular and having friends are not the same thing. Rejected children typically don"t have friends ether, but neglected children typically do have friends, whether it is a couple or just one good one. Conditions associated with friendlessness: to have emotional problems, to lag behind other children in perspective taking abilities, to be less altruistic, to have deficiencies in such social skills as group entry, cooperative play, and conflict management. If you don"t know how to enter a group, you will have a harder time making and maintaining friends: to be generally less sociable, to show poorer school adjustment, to make fewer educational gains.
