PSY312H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Angular Gyrus, Frontal Lobe, Temporal Lobe
Document Summary
Different languages have different orientations in how the sounds go together. It seems that we are hardwired to acquire lang: chomsky. We know that there are parts of the brain devised to understand language and to produce it: separate parts of the brain, they are connected to each other. Seems to be uniquely human (that can use spoken language: there is communication in other species, but not spoken language, the understanding of language we can see in species (like a dog knows their name) We can speak to other primates using sign language, but not spoken language: this is a very complex behaviour, it has to be built in because it"s so complex. Sounds are the basic building block of language. Temporal lobe picks up sound: don"t hear th sound in other languages, but you hear it in english, these sounds are built in, so even if you don"t speak these languages, these sounds are built in.
