Document Summary

What comes into our ears is just a series of pressure differences across time and our ears decode them and give the impression of hearing noise and these noises can be speech, melody. We take a bunch of sound waves and create something informational, arriving at some kind of idea that has been communicated through an acoustic channel. All the things that come in-between are things that we already know but we don"t really have any conscious awareness of that stuff. Rules for combining words/morphemes: grammar: this refers to the rules that everyone knows implicitly rather than just how to write nice . Rules for how to use language in communicative contexts: pragmatics: this is how to take turns, address someone politely, how to take perspective, the rules of the road basically. A child born in the word eventually need to learn all of the above and be able to do so effectively.
