Most sentences we hear on a daily basis are new to us; they are not identical. This refers to the productivity/generativity of language. Some orders are ungrammatical: copied charlies jake does not sound grammatically correct. We need slightly more ordered rule to produce various combinations of sentences. Open class items: the word ginormous sounds funny but takes on a meaning of their own. Closed class items: prepositions, words like because. The person that is listening to you will start to lose track: john said that mary said that. Morpheme: smallest unit of language: basic nouns and verbs: cat, table, over. Bound morphemes: must have an attaching component; cannot stand alone: cat vs. cats, we can"t have the word heed.
