Document Summary

Acculturation = process by which people migrate to and learn a culture that"s different from their heritage culture. Who adjusts better cultural distance cultural distance = how much two cultures differ in their overall ways of life. One analogy is the closer one"s mother tongue is to english, the easier it is to learn. Similarity, the more similar one"s heritage culture, the less acculturative stress they experience: example: more successful adjustment was seen among malaysian exchange students who studied in singapore than those who studied in new zealand. This can be extended with how you buy food: going to the grocery store vs. a market place. The shorter the distance you have to change, the easier the adjustment into the new culture. Instances when these people go through cultural distance and cultural fit, and how that influenced their decision of moving to canada.
