Number one rule is that you can"t hurt your client. But sometimes law requires you to hurt patient. You don"t have to tell if your client tells you they committed murder because it harms them. If they say they are going to harm someone or themselves then you have to tell authorities (legal responsibility) Ex. if they"re a serial killer and say they"re going to kill someone again then you have to tell authorities. You don"t have to inform authorities about the previous murders but if you suspect danger to someone else then you must tell. Power of mental health professionals: testify not guilty by the reason of insanity (first power of health professional) Competent or not competent; liable or not liable to be held accountable: commit to a hospital hold against their will (second power) 72 hours initial commitment period you have to go to the hospital and you can"t leave, decided by two doctors.
