PSY395H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Adrenal Gland, Lipid Bilayer, Neuroglia
Document Summary
Psy395 may 13, 2015 l2: the endocrine system. Ectocrine: cells talking to cells nearby chemical signaling comes back to cells to influence that same cell that faraway travelling, through bloodstream. pheromones. Genital glands will rel"s for possible mates to pick up on. Ductless glands, but rich w/ blood supply. Each hormone has own receptor and can travel to every cell. Endocrine structures for intestines rel"s insulin into bloodstream. Regulation of proteins allows cells to change. Hormones can act in nucleus to affect transcription. Since can"t cross lipid bilayer, act on receptors on cell membrane. Larger the protein, it takes longer to degrade and excreted. Stays longer in bloodstream and can be soluble in blood. Measured by radioactive material attached to hormone and observe how long 50% of it is degraded. Throughout evolution there have been point mutations that has changes the sequence of the hormone but not the func"t of the protein.
