In males, may have more androgen or estrogen receptors in areas of brain, or females might have less. Looking at quantity will tell us about the ones that survive. Androgen might increase cell death or estrogen increase cell survival. Vice versa, can happen in diff parts of brain. Neurons can be larger or smaller in one sex or another. All these can contribute to nucleus volume. Organizational affects cell number, activational effects influence receptor number or cell size or dendritic spines. Not always the case, but true in many cases. Nuclei may not look diff b/w gender but when activated by stimuli, it causes a differentiation. Some areas of brain involved in sexual behaviour in both gender, but difference emerges when different stimuli exposed to particular gender. Immediate early genes: if a cell is active, it pro"d these substances. Allows them to look at receptors in the brain. On the right was given mating experience, 30min prior to dissection.
