Memories may be visual, auditory, or tactile (attached to smell) Memory is only what you paid attention to. Sensory detection - don"t decide what you pay attention to or ignore. Shallow processing - structural encoding (capital letters, what color, etc ) : not paying attention to meaning! Intermediate processing - default mechanism: phonemic encoding (bysound . rhyming, homonyms, etc ) Deep processing - semantic encoding (meaning or symbolism attached) Elaboration little examples/stories --> how we teach religion/morality/ Changes how we behave and act and how we perceive ourselves. Self referential encoding: we are self-centered. Remember/pay attention more: take old information that can be remembered, take new info and attach it to old.
