PSY240 – Lecture 1 9/11/2013 11:00:00 AM We are going to be looking at what abnormal behavior is, how they treat it, and how it is portrayed Office hours on Wednesdays from 1-3, and also Mondays 4:30-6 Psychology is the scientific investigation of behavior and the mind, of humans and animals Pathology is a disease/sickness, and this is what we are going to be investigating – it is in the mind and behavior There is more than one way to treat pathology, and if it is physical pathology, there is more than one way to treat but if it is mental pathology such as depression (chemical imbalance) however is it effectively treated by using talking therapy Different between a psychiatrist is:  Medical doctors, and they go to medical school, prescription privileges  PhD’s and research, and only in some states people have prescription privileges Review your notes at the end of each week, and read your chapters before coming to class and to be very well prepared, and read the text/notes about three times – and you understand them 12/16 hour commitment to this course this week For all of the papers written, they have to be in APA style The final exam is going to be worth 40% - each of the papers written are worth 15% each, and the midterm is worth 30% The weighing of the
