PSY240H5 – Introduction toAbnormal Psychology Lecture 7 – February 24, 2014 Research Methods - Research: studying something; preferentially systematically Why is this Topic Important? - To become a scientist o Psychologists are trained to collect data, and make sense of it - Foundation for understanding research - Become an informed and critical consumer of information o I.E., Relationship of eating donuts and heart disease; there is a correlational relationship  Inferences: drinking soda causes bad health; but also people with disposition to bad health, drink soda; or there is a third variable - To become a practitioner o You need to understand the research Ways of Thinking (not in the textbook) – from least sophisticated to most sophisticated - Tenacity o Least sophisticated o These are beliefs we have that are impervious to contrary evidence o Not going to change, and we cant tell you where they’ve come from o Example: Superstition, Religion - Authority o Gather information from authority figures o Told how to think, and what to think by other people o Example: parents, prof - APriori Method o You have given thought to an event before it has occurred o Beliefs that are agreeable to reason o They are rational and are consistent with natural events o Beliefs that seem to be correct, but may not be correct o Example of a priori belief that isn’t correct: the Earth is flat - Method of Science o Most sophisticated, and is used to test a belief o The most reliable way of thinking that uses, not only reason, but rules of logic The Empirical Method of Science in PsychologyAssumes: - Behaviour follows certain rules o Example: If I hit you, a behavioural reaction may be anger - Behaviour has causes o One of the goals of research is to look for causes of behaviour in order to treat it o Example: Schizophrenia is caused by dopamine neurotransmitters - Causes can be discovered using scientific method o Are ideally data driven Goals of Research in Psychology - Describe behaviour o Describe what a particular abnormal behaviour look like PSY240H5 – Introduction toAbnormal Psychology Lecture 7 – February 24, 2014 o Collect statistics and describe what they show - Predict behaviour - Explain behaviour o Here is where it comes from - Control behaviour o Treatment The Resea
