Lecture 4 Vgotsky's Sociocultural Theory Social Contexts -other people contribute to cognitive development -argued that cognitive development is not possible without a social context Zone of proximal Development -tasks child cannot do alone but can learn with help of more skilled partners -learning by example -you cannot learn language unless you are exposed to it by other people -maturation and readiness - may need to be an exposure to an experience, Piaget argued there are stages, but not until that child is ready -Vgotsky's maturation in the social context -collective, people around, that caused the development of the individual -everybody, the society, contributes -had to have interaction with other people that cause the development of the person -very insistent that it was the collective that directed cognitive development -reflection of his own society, however, his ideas were not widely embraced in the Soviet Union because of his Jewish background Video: very sophisticated skill, frontal lobe function, other species can't do this well, human can do this by 4 or 5 -triangles together, circles together (categorization: colour, size, shape) -stimuli qualities - Vgotsky's discovered in 60s and 70s in the West, continue to be applied in classrooms in Europe and North America -social interactions that's most important, comes from teachers and peers (teach each other), open classroom, no desks or walls, some success, some non success -children construct knowledge, they are not passive, which is unlike what Piaget said. -learning can lead development -development cannot be separated from its social context -language plays a central role in mental development -Vgotsky, block test -maturation prerequisites to mastering skills -learning impacts development Counting Bears (Zone of Proximal Development) -first time let do it on his own, he did not do it correctly -Level of Assisted Performance: second time, guides him takes his hand and we'll do it together, he gets it right this time -third time, she's going to point but has going to count -you will not development without experience from other people Lecture 4 -can perform at a higher level with assistance with teachers, peers, or ima
