Based on that membership, give rewards to our groups, and enforce boundaries from. Desire to be in a group can make anyone prejudice out groups. Do these things because it tells us something about those people: means we learn a lot about ourselves based on the categories we place. Social identification ourselves in: adopt identity as part of self-concept. Social comparison: compare our social groups with other groups, self-esteem is maintained by boosting our self-group. Maximize positive distinctiveness: enhance ourselves/groups by making other groups less desirable because our ultimate goal is self-enhancement. Way we can identify who we are, but also a source of self-esteem. Put them in summer camp, divided into two groups: unaware of the other group, eagles, rattlers. Introduced to the other group, fight for resources. Supposed makes us engage in negative behaviour.
