Through reciprocity, we get back what we would need to pay for (sociologists call this instrumental value: the typical person has about 150 important relationships in their lives (social network analysis) Our social capital is what allows us to see if we have done anything good in our lives. The social capital approach is not new, it is old. It is not the number of relationships w e have, but the diversity of the relationships we have: we have our family, culture, religious organization, friends from school, friends from youth, etc. If our relationships are not diverse, we are risking loss.
