Stress and stress response: reaction to aversive conditions, stereotyped responses with similar hormonal responses, acute vs chronic stress: there is a difference in timing of action of the stressors. This difference generates diverse responses: hpa axis: important mediator of stress. Adrenal gland: the cortex produces glucocorticoids, mineralocorticoids and androgens (testosterone, the medulla produces epinephrine and norepinephrine (catecholamines) Exam day: the exam is a social stressor, therefore in the days before the exam the levels of e and ne are moderately elevated, but constant. However, at the day of the exam, the levels of ne and e rise and peak, re ecting a situation of ght or ight . Modern stress research: hans selye (1930-1980) observed the same symptoms (a sickness syndrome) in patients with diverse infecto-contagious disease. He observed suppressed immune system with shrinking of lymphatic organs, shrinking of the adrenals, etc.
