RLG205 Introduction to South Asian Religions
Week 1 INTRODUCTION
Hindu -> Arabic + Persia work for geographic marker. Recently, used for ethnic +
religious markers.
In past, Hinduism wasnt a word.
Hinduism: diverse ideas/practices. No founder. No one set of doctrines. Hindus
believe in many different things.
Orientalism: is primarily a term used for the imitation or depiction of aspects of
Eastern cultures in the West by writers, designers and artists. the character or
characteristics of the Oriental peoples. Is related to colonialism and critics how
West studies the non-west. Partly responsible for creating Hinduism + changed
some practices.
Warren Hastings was the first Governor-General of British India. He put a judicial
plan in 1772.
Lex Loci act in 1845: land laws based on British Common Law.
These laws created Hinduism because it forced people to choose if they Hindu or not.
Habitus: things that bring people together.
A stipulative definition is a type of definition in which a new or currently-existing
term is given a specific meaning for the purposes of argument or discussion in a
given context. Use a stipulative definition to define Hinduism. Hindu is a modern
concept so we will use many properties to define.
Prototype theory is a mode of graded categorization in cognitive science, where some
members of a category are more central than others. Use to define Hinduism, where
some people are more Hindu than others. Uses many properties to define Hinduism
in complex ways.
Very hard to define Hinduism -> people construct themselves.
