Document Summary
Deviance can be behavior, it can be action, it can be what you think. A lot of ambiguity around it because its so variable. Couple different ways to talk about it, the statistical definition: as a teen, (12-17), the common things that are normal and the uncommon things are deviant. To engage in serious crime would be considered deviant because most people don"t do it. If you were a teen and didn"t engage in any crimes or drugs, its considered deviant because you"re outside of the norm. It"s a model of our behavior but not a good definition. A combination of many of these absolutist: believes that there is an absolute moral order, always be wrong or always be right. Good example is religion, some things are right and wrong and it doesn"t change. Problem is that it doesn"t really recognize any chance. People generally agree what is deviant and what isn"t, we have consensus.
