Document Summary

Ambiguity: some things are considered strange in some places and not in others. Statistical: doesn"t tell us anything about values but we place values on it. For instance, if you don"t smoke, you"re a deviant because a lot of teens smoke. Something is better or worse so a value is placed on it. Absolutist: things that are always right/always wrong. Certain religious beliefs; there is an absolute moral order to which people subscribe. Normative: sometimes we agree on norms, sometimes we don"t. There is consensus but not everyone agrees and they are subject to change. Prescientific: if someone was acting up, it was thought to be the work of a demon/spirit/magic. There was also the divine structure of absolute morals, so if anyone deterred from this code, it would be considered sinful. Classical: this was the era of rationality and science.
